CITY ON THE WATER
A great feudal capital, where a graceful reconstructed castle now shares skyline with blocky modernity, Osaka is one of Japan's leading ports and manufacturing centers. Association with water is pervasive with the presence of rivers, canals, a sheltered harbor, and an expansive bay, which houses a new airport built on a man-made island. Osaka hosts a fine botanical garden in Tennoji Park and takes pleasure from traditional Japanese arts, theatre, and ceremonies. Osakans are known for their dedication to good food and for outgoing personalities. Earthquakes have devastated the region from time to time.
